You knot the end that is away from the spool...
You knot the end that is away from the spool because of the way that the thread twists. If you use thread for hand sewing from a wound bobbin, you know the end closest to the bobbin.

I have ripped out the quilting on three quilts...
I have ripped out the quilting on three quilts this year - for a friend who was learning to quilt and had some "wonkies." It isn't awful to do. Just relax and do it realizing that it takes a while....

Treat it as a striped fabric. Use the linear nature of the design to your advantage. No fabric is awful when cut small enough!

Yep - Did the same thing 2 years ago. Still have a flat place on the tip and no fingerprint there. Bled forever and hurt like heck. Please be careful, everyone. They really are dangerous blades.
