You get bias by cutting the fabric on the bias, usually at a 45-degree angle. Most men's shirts have 2 1/2 yards in them.

It probably is raw cotton. Hand washing is good. There is no attached photo. Check for open seams where the cotton came out and repair. If hand-stitched do the same.
