I have used them to crochet mug rugs/ coasters/dollhouse rugs and hot mats. Also the string quilt in my avatar uses selvage-size strips. I don't do any of that any more.

that's what I did, normally it makes a good stitch, but just every so often the thread wraps itself around an extra 2x. Presser foot is always up when I thread the machine.

I would want to make sure the quilt doesn't get used as a table covering for the table where they display all the gifts. I guess just bring it as is, sounds like someone will be displaying the gifts...
