Was the fabric prewashed? I had that happen with a RJR fabric that had missed being prewashed. It shrunk enough to distort the block when I pressed it.

I don't use basting spray, but with my pins, I'd do the spiral first. If the fabric moves a bit, there's no place for it to go if the square is first.
I think I'd do a sample of each, then decide....
