I learned to make ruffles on my serger recentIy. It is the way to go if you can. I doubled the fabric(width-wise) and gathered the raw edges. Made a nice full ruffle.

I use felt for practice also. I find if I haven't done any quiltíng for awhile I need to "brush up" a bit before starting. A little practice before starting my project gives me better results.

I don't make anything larger than a double but I try to use wide backing so I can use the leftover as binding. I sometimes use wide backing to back two smaller quilts if I can get a good price on it....
