I have used flannel sheets as backing for quite a few quilts. If buying new sheets, wash them a few times. I always look for used flannel sheets at yard sales. Makes a cozy backing.

I don't use a walking foot and it works fine for me. I sew my binding to the back and then bring it forward and use a zig zag or decorative stitch to sew it down.
