I use cotton, but I buy in lots at house sales or on ebay...to me, if it isn't old and doesn't break, it's fine. I save my more expensive thread for quilting.

I sometimes use pounce..years ago we used to spray it with hair spray because the pounce rubbed off..now I use pounce, then take a chalk pencil and trace the design, takes longer bit so much less...

Without seeing it..my guess would be that there is a teeny bit of lint or thread somewhere that you're not finding, so that with every bobbin use, just a little lint can push it over the tipping...
