If you will not be washing the quilt AND if you used a good quality fusible web, you should be fine. The only fusible web product I like is Steam a Seam. Other brands seem to not hold as well.

I am not sure there is anything you can do to fix it. Like someone said before- the needle is puncturing and weakening the plastic fabric. Is is a plastic coated canvas, or basically just plastic?...

I have taught my 12 year old step DD how to use the sewing machine by making a nine patch throw pillow. It is easy enough to teach how to cut the squares with a rotary cutter and it sews up quickly...
