If you contact Project Linus in your area, many have quilt kits ( batting included) and since there are donations, if you knit or crochet, many times, there is plenty of yarns stashed in the local storehouse to keep you in projects, too.
I crochet, and quilt, both, and have done afghans and quilts for PL. I am part of the Dallas/Collin/Grayson County, TX chapter.

Can't speak for other chapters, but ours is as supportive to each other as this Quilting Board. It is also another great way to make friends in your area who have your same interests.
