a lot of patterns come in adobe format to prevent the cut and paste methods...Loretta is right to save in a file on your desktop. To begin a new folder, click on your desktop and right click your mouse or fingerpads (laptop). You can rename your file by clicking on the "new folder" and send all your patterns to it until you find a compatible printer.
I've seen several older printers at garage sales lately, probably due to(*&#$(*&(#*$&@! Vista (LOL MOONPI) updates. I do have Vista as well...since I didn't have a choice. Bought a new laptop and hired a tech to change it back to XP to no avail. Can't downgrade the new stuff and can't upgrade a good part of the older or any of our sewing software/hardware.
