We have a wonderful quilt teacher at Adult Ed. She suggested that we cut 6" squares and center the square on a 12" square of muslin and a 10" square of batting. Add strips on two opposite sides of the square and then trim. Then add strips on the other two sides and trim to the 10 " muslin. It was so much fun because none of the strips had to match - they just had to work with the square. Fun and almost done!

Perhaps this is a regular pattern, or maybe it was her idea.
Whatever - it's fun and it's all scraps.

There's a good chance that my figures are wrong, but I hope you get the idea.
