Always use your quilting foot when quilting, unless doing FMQ, it keeps the front, batting and backing going under the needle at the same time, less ripples waves or whatever. Also make sure the backing is kept smooth when making the sandwich. I clamp mine to a glass topped dining table and use safety pins to pin about every 3-4".
