This is very similar to the one I learnt on at my grandmother's farm. Just sit and practise treadling without any thread in the machine, and once you get an even rhythm up you can then start putting a piece of practice material through - still without thread in the machine, and as you don't stop your rhythm or become less jerky in your movements, you can thread it and play to your heart's content. My gran actually had me sewing on paper first. She inspected the needle holes to see if I was staying on the lines she'd drawn. Then I advanced to swirls and circles. I was 7 when we did this and can still remember the experience. Have fun!
