When my husband was in the service and we were stationed in Montana, my husband and I went with a friend "to town" (we lived 60 miles up in the Rocky Mountains). I had borrowed a sewing machine from a neighbor to make some curtains for our apartment. While we were in town, this friend asked me how much it would take to make me a dress, so he proceeded to ask the saleslady what was the ugliest material she had in the store. He bought it and gave it to me to make my dress from. It really was awful, it had big orange flowers, and some greenery, awful looking stuff. Anyway, I made it up into a 2-piece outfit that the girls were wearing in the 50's with gathered skirt and a top with ties on the shoulders. It turned out very pretty and he couldn't believe his eyes when he saw me wearing it. That was a joke on him! So, some very ugly fabrics can really turn out nice once they are made up.
