i find pressing each seam as i sew it helps . press on a hard surface not your regular ironing board. press the back and front of the seams so you don't get any little humps. sharon shamber has a free video on how to make a small board. elanor burns has a video showing how to fan out the joining point of the seams, i've also been known to use a batting covered mallet.
