They are called German Stars. I saw the show on HGTV and was also fascinated. I was able to contact the lady and via mail she sent step by step directions until I was able to make them. I spent about a year making enough to cover our Christmas tree at church and with white lights and the white German Stars it was beautiful! I made 3 different sizes by using different size strips of paper. You do have to have it cut at an office supply and use 17" length paper. I will warn you - it is addictive!
