It stands for featherweight. They are the older machines, Singer, I think. Just straight stitch.
OH, I think I have one. It is a White/ goes back and forth. My husband bought it for me used(underlined) on our first wedding annversary 49 years ago. Does that make it a featherweight. Because it sure is heavy to me!!!!! I don't mean to sound flip, I am just wondering if an FW is just a Singer or any machine that goes back and forth and is an older machine.

Not a featherweight. Only Singer made them from 1933 till mid 1960's. They weigh 11lbs out of the box and have a fold down bed, in the box they weigh about 14lbs, thus the name featherweight. They only straight stitch. Look at my Avatar with the pug, that is a black featherweight missing motor. They came in a white, sometimes greenish, black, and tan. Any other color is a repaint job. They are the best machines for piecing you can find, but arm ht,lgth is a little small for quilting. :-D
