Not a dumb question at all! I just made a bureau top and used some fleece as "batting". It was thinner than batting but provided a bit of body. If you wanted something even thinner and more "drapey", I imagine you could just use backing material. These squares (or rectangles as the link shows) are so easy to do when I have just a few minutes to sew :-)
