I've got one planned for using as a beach-quilt. Throw down the denim side and sit on the flannel side for evening bonfires.
I have a friend who made one alternating flannel blocks with denim blocks and it was awesome. It was, however, a gift for a college kid, not rambunctious little kids, so it won't get as rough as useage.
