It looks like pretty new carpet, I was wondering if there was a less drastic solution then taking it up. We're going to be putting a bit of money into other things in the house and I hate to add that much to it.
My sister in-law did stained glass work in one of her bedrooms which had carpet. She laid a clear heavy plastic down wall to wall over the carpet and it worked great keeping those small pieces of glass chards out of the carpet. It might work for pins and needles as well.
