If you want to lose 1 to 2 pounds a week you will have to cut 500 to 1,000 calories a day from your diet. (It is about 3,500 calories per pound.) You can do this through a change in eating habits or an increase in activity, or both.

To understand how many calories you need to maintain a particular weight, take that weight and multiply it by 11 and that will give you the amount of calories you need to substain that weight. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds, it is 200 x 11 = 2,200 calories to maintain your weight at 200 pounds.
