I like the idea of "antiquing" the finished top, tea dying is a great idea, if you tea dye it and you don't like it washing soda will take the tea away. Sometimes tea can give a dirty look but coffee gives a lovely warm tone in dying...just use the cheapest instant you can find, make a very strong solution and soak in very hot water over night.
