The metal tip aren't really necessary and are a pain in the neck to clean. Just barely open the Elmers and put little dots on the fabric. I have been using glue a lot in different applications. If you are doing bindings that you want to hand stitch down, make sure you press the binding after glueing as that will keep it from getting hard.
This is what I did - didn't even know there was a special tip - but just out of the bottle applied sparingly as above worked fine for me.
