If you are looking for a way to re-use materials to make a quilt of your top, you could just use an old blanket as batting and an old sheet for the back?
As for how to finish off the blocks, I prefer to impose a little bit of structure on craziness and square them off with a little border, but that it not to everyone's taste!

Sounds right up my street and I have used a blanket before. The sheet is also a great idea. I have an old white army sheet from when my parents where in the forces. It's still in really good nick. It would add a little more sentimentality to it.
