I think you might first go to a quilt shop and look at various applique projects ---alternatively buy or get from library a book showing applique techniques. You might want to talk to somebody about the various types. Then you can decide whether you like the zigzag, raw edge, maybe button hole, etc. There are lots of different techniques I was thrilled to get the buttonhole on my Janome, but lot of machines offer various stitches that work. I saw a public television program just yesterday with Nancy Zieman showing various techniques. It was really interesting.
