I've heard that scientists believe that socks are the larval form of coat hangers.

This is based on the statistical correlation of socks that go missing in the washer/dryer to the otherwise unexplainable increase in the number of coat hangers in closets. The socks aren't really missing, they've just molted and turned into coat hangers....like caterpillars turning into butterflies. ;)
