I just make the outside logs wider. I am working on one where I cuts the strips 1 1/2 wide. The last rotation is cut 2 inches---then trimmed to perfection.
I still take care with the middle ones but not to drive myself crazy.

Made my Log Cabin years ago; it never occured to me to square a block til it was finished. If I'd been smart enuf to use your method - my last log strips would be the same size - oh well, too late now.
