The rough cabinet required some Old English scratch cover. After I exchanged the bobbin for one of those I use in my Bernette, it fixed the tension problems it had. Put a newer 1/4 inch foot on it - it sews like a dream.
You don't take the belt off the top wheel on the machine. You take the belt off the treadle wheel under the cabinet. There is a little lever that helps guide the belt off the treadle wheel that the treadle belt is threaded through. Sometime you can just guide the belt off with your fingers.
