It's that plain background that is creating the effect - there's a lot of contrast between that and the yellow and pale blue so it's not blending as well as it could. This is why the guidelines in the OBW book say to NOT pick plain backgrounds. But in bringing that out with the narrow border, it will give it a reason for being there, visually speaking, so it won't smack you round the face quite so much! Then in using the pink for the outer border, the yellow and blue will take a back seat and everything will blend much better. :-D
