Make something simple just using one cut, like a four or nine patch squares. Buy extra material because you will make cutting mistakes. You can always save the extra material for a scrappy quilt or other projects. Re-check your cut pieces to make sure they are correct before sewing the block, then after. Buy a self healing mat(mine is 18 x 24 inch) and rotary cutter as these are your best friends. I use a 6 1/2 inch x 24 inch clear acrylic ruler with black print, The yellow ones have too much yellow for me to see good. A 12 inch square for squaring up blocks helps a lot. Use a new sewing machine needle(if starting a quilt, when you hear the clonking of the needle, then change needle again) and use the right thread.
