I too think that alternating the pinwheel blocks, along the side , top and bottom with plain blocks would take away from some of the busy look, maybe smaller pinwheels. You might also lay a strip of gold fab. in a thin border between the main part of the quilt and the pinwheels to see what that does. That is going to be just precious!!. I think that it would really add to the quilt if you used all white or alternated between white and the purple (if I remember by LSU colors) pararie points around the edges. I used the 3D pinwheels on a wall hanging and added the pararie points, I really liked the effect. You can always just pin some to see what it is going to look like.
