Tessie,
They called it a Featherweight because it weighs only 12 pounds. A typical sewing machine then would have weighed 25 pounds or more. My old Sears (White) from the 60s is so heavy, I cannot even lift it on the table anymore. The Featherweight is easily carried around, lifted up on work surfaces plus taken to workshops, etc. For its time, it was fantastic!
