It does better away from the light but I stack mine on open shelves, sorted by color, so I can see what I've got. If it's hidden, it tends to get into a mess because I need to take it out to see and match up colors. I've thought about putting canvas covers like roman shades on the front of my shelves, but that's a project for another day.
