I'm a new quilter also -- what I am learning is that there are no rules -- you can be creative and do what you want! This from a person who before beginning to quilt, never deviated from a pattern! Your quilt top is beautiful. I like the suggestion of pinning on the borders and going about your business, then looking at it again and again if necessary until you are happy with the finished look.
