When I first read about your starch can it was an older post so I didn't understand that you used the lid for the scallops. I thought you used starch to attach the applique pieces and thought... that's a great idea! Starch it really good so that it sticks to the background and then sew around it. When washed it would come loose in the middle and it would be like needle turn or something.
I'm a recent convert to starch - never used it til recently. I got some for the fabric Rhonda sent me for kaleidoscopes because she'd washed it and it wouldn't 'slip' enough to line up the stack! (Not her fault, of course! Not complaining!) Well, yesterday I sprayed some along the strip I was folding for double binding and it had the effect of holding it together so it went on the quilt easy peasy! Great stuff, starch, even started using it on hubby's shirts! :wink: :D
