I think the pigs are adorable. I've wanted to make a pig quilt for a long time as well. I owned a pot bellied pig at one time and she was special to me up until her passing so I am going to make a quilt in her honor. Anyway, the batiks are a great idea. They really bring out the shape. If you don't want to satin stitch around them you could always use a hand stitched blanket stitch as used in applique. OR, even easier, use permanent fabric markers to detail the piglets.
In any case, keep up the good work. It will turn out terrific.
