http://www.hulu.com/ . They have all kinds of TV shows (even classics like Mr. Ed and The Bob Newhart Show) sorted by genre. Same for movies. The selection of movies isn't the best, but they are free. They also have HuluPlus, which is a pay service, for $7 or $8 per month, but that is for current network tv show archives and for use on different devices other than your computer.
For more of a selection of old movies, have you tried your local library? Ours here rents them out for no charge on DVD and still some VHS. All you need is your library card.
