If you join the vintage singers group on yahoo, there have been postings about this. Just pulling from memory, I believe there are some bearings that may need oiling/greasing that can be causing the whine. I have a 401 and there is NO whine. If you join the group you can search past posts about it and read up on it. I would want to fix it and not live with it.
