I have used a popcycle stick. Buy a turkey baster, that looks like a syringe, available at a dollar store. I'm really sold on the idea of using Elmer's glue...it works great. Next Fall when school supplies are on sale, stock up on glue. Use it to hold applicate pieces in place, as well.
