I don't pin. I lay them on the mat and am careful to place the ruler on top rather than slide the ruler. Then when I cut, I carefully pick up the ruler and lay it back down. I don't touch the fabric at all until all of the cuts are made. You could pin, just be careful your pins stay away from your rotary blade!
