In Germany years ago people would have a blown glass pickle ornament on their tree...the 1st child to find it got to open up an extra gift..and if the family could only afford one gift, then the 1st one to find it got to open their gift 1st...

PS As I was mid way thru and trying to square up those arced paper-pieced blocks, my face probably looked like I had just taken a big bite of a sour dill pickle!!
..maybe that's the REAL reason it has that name...
