***And none of the carriers (UPS, FedEx, USPS) will help either the shipper or the recipient once a package has been delivered.***

As a FedEx courier, I have to disagree with this statement. If a package comes up missing after delivery, you can bet my manager and I are investigating it. I have recovered pkgs many times where a neighbor took a pkg in and forgot to tell the recipient. I have also left pkgs hidden at the front door when it turns out that door is rarely used, etc, etc. However, it is that time of year and here in Houston we sometimes have thieves follow us around. You never see them, but they are quick to nab a pkg. So, if you can, pay the extra couple of bucks for required signature or have it sent to your work address if they don't mind. Or, try to have a neighbor watch for it. We also are on guard and I will not leave a pkg if I think there is a problem.
