Instructions are simple and easy to follow; each block is a different pattern; the blocks are different sizes; and I did mine scrappy. The block patterns are simple ones that look complicated due to color placement and you just can't get bored as you are not repeating the same pattern over and over. I used civil war reproduction fabrics and had an awesome time with choosing the colors/fabric design for each block - and I can't begin to describe how much fun it was to decide which blocks went where on my layout. Best of luck finding just the right pattern for your first "real" quilt.
