I now understand too. I kept telling myself, but you cut it, when you sew it back together, you are taking up 1/4" off of both sides and that will make them off-square. Then I studied it some more and realized that the edges with their extra 1/4" were the edges that get sewn and the half square dark ones you cut are on the outside. But, it took a while to soak in.
