Yep, that needle in the spring is a no-go for my 201 as well. I think the best darning foot is the old fashioned one with the coil spring and it goes straight up and down and not at an angle like the newer arm spring kind.
Also, are you using metal or plastic bobbins, topstitch or quilting needles?
Are you setting the thread length indicator to the nutral line? These are all things I would play with.
