Do not use any commercial flea preparations (drops, collars, shampoo, etc.) without consulting a vet. Definitely vacuum both the carpeting AND any wood/laminate floors (they get between the cracks). Wash (or throw out) any soft toys. Wash linens in hot water with bleach. If fabric can't be washed (bed spreads, etc.) take to the dry cleaners in a plastic bag and warn them of the fleas. Car must be vacuumed as people can host fleas as well.
Good luck getting rid of them. They can be a misery.
