I'd consider getting the old Singer twin needle. It's great for speed and the twin bobbins hold a lot of thread. Just remove 1 needle and bobbin for single needle sewing. I use a Consew twin needle for flag making that was formerly used in a leather luggage factory. I've never messed with the stitch length. I think it would sew through my bones if I got my hand in the way! Around Albany, NY even an old twin needle of any brand is about $400 and up.

Unfortunately you can't make the stitches long enough to do leather so you do about have to give those away.
