It has been my experience with quilt as you go, and making rag quilts, that a waking foot works much better. When my quilting foot broke, I tried to quilt without it, but learned pretty fast that I didn't like the results, and went out and bought a new one. When working with the sandwiched blocks, the quilting /walking foot feeds through much better, at least on my old machine.
