No it's not. The day I bought my first one at a dealer I wanted to take the free class but it was scheduled 3 weeks out. I went home, read the manual cover to cover, watched a bunch of Utube videos and was off and running. By the day of the class, there was nothing left to teach me about my machine. I even showed her how I can get it to do something they didn't know it could do. I figured it out by accident.
Two pieces of advice I like to give when asked about machine embroidery:
1-Get a machine with the biggest hoops you can afford. Something I was told and didn't listen to. That's why I have two machines.
2-This hobby can quickly become a $$ pit if you let it. You can quickly sink your budget with all the threads, extra hoops, stabilizers, etc.. Take it slow, buy a few spools of thread at first and a couple different stabilizers. That way if you find it isn't your cup of tea you won't be too far in the hole other than the machine.
