If you have enough of the lighter backing fabric, you could use it for the binding. The backing fabric would match nicely with the lighter parts in the front. If you want a dark strip on the front, take a look at Charisma's QB tutorial titled Quick Machine binding with flange. You could use the backing fabric for the main binding with a darker blue accent flange in the front. Beautiful quilt top!
Good call, tartan! I just did that on a baby quilt and everybody is complimenting me as it looks so clever, sets off the patterned border.
I give it 4 stars and suggest you try doing a bit to see how you like it.
